As we begin to approach the warmer months of the year, it’s important to be prepared with a flea and tick prevention plan for your pets. It goes without saying that these pests are a nuisance and can wreak havoc on your pets and your home. But don’t underestimate the importance of planning ahead. If you wait until you have an infestation on your hands, it will be much harder to deal with. Even more serious than having fleas in your home, your dog or cat can actually contract serious illnesses from ticks and flea bites, such as Lyme disease, anemia, tapeworms and a wealth of skin problems. That’s why it’s so important to start thinking about flea and tick prevention now, before the season starts.
One of the most effective ways to prevent fleas and ticks is by using a topical treatment. These medications come in pre-measured application tubes based on the weight of your pet and are quick and easy to apply once per month. For topical treatments, the most popular products are K9 Advantix II for dogs over 7 weeks of age and Advantage II for cats 8 weeks or older. These products kill and repel fleas, ticks and mosquitos and will also destroy fleas of all life stages. Convenient, single-use applicators administer the right dosage for your pet’s size and provide protection for an entire month. Disrupting the flea life cycle is crucial to preventing and controlling an infestation. While many other flea treatments only kill adult fleas, Advantix and Advantage also eliminate flea eggs and larvae, which would otherwise eventually grow into adult fleas. These medications are also waterproof, so you can still bathe your pet throughout the month.
If you don’t like the idea of administering topical treatments, or have trouble remembering to do so each month, another solution you might consider is a flea collar. Typical flea collars last for about a month and can be cut to size to fit your pet. A popular store favorite is the Seresto flea collar, which kills and repels fleas and ticks using “sustained release technology” that lasts for 8 months. It’s non-greasy, easy to fit and provides lasting protection so you and your pets can get back to enjoying summer. It doesn’t get much easier than that!
