Our mission of supporting the adoption option began when we opened our Louisville area Springhurst location in the fall of 1996. That was the first store where we gave the Kentucky Humane Society rent-free space for an adoption center. The center was open during regular retail hours and staffed by KHS employees. There was an adoption counselor who could conduct on-the-spot adoptions and a small number of shelter pets housed on site. Feeders Supply was the first pet store in the region and one of the first in the country to partner with an animal shelter in this way. Today we still use this basic model for the KHS adoption centers located in eight of our stores.
KHS officials estimate that in 20 years our customers have adopted more than 40,000 dogs and cats at our stores, helping KHS save lives. Every week this year, more than 60 dogs and cats will go to a new home from one of the centers. Those are numbers we’re very proud of, and we thank you for opening your heart and home to a deserving pet.
Of course, our daily adoption efforts are not limited to the KHS centers. We also house adoptable cats at our Baxter and Middletown stores from Shamrock Foundation, at State Street and Grant Line stores from New Albany Floyd County Animal Shelter, at Clarksville from Humane Association of Clark County, and at Frankfort from Franklin County Humane Society. In addition, multiple dog rescues conduct adoption meet and greet events at our other stores.
